Champions League Group D – Preview

Group D is very probably the most exciting group. Atalanta, Liverpool and Ajax have made a name for themselves in the Champions League over the past few years. Atalanta played superbly in the end, but in the end they were stopped by PSG. Ajax reached the semi-finals in 2019, but were eventually stopped by finalist Tottenham, who lost to Liverpool in the final. Liverpool are of course the clear title favourites after winning the Champions League in 2019.

The 2019 title holder was weakened recently, in 2020 they lost early against Atletico Madrid. Now it is hoped that Liverpool can build on the outstanding 2019 performance. Liverpool received a 7.00 quota for the title this year from Betano and is therefore one of the hottest candidates for the title.

Atalanta have recently had to contend with the loss of Josip Ilicic, but it is not yet clear when he will return to the squad. However, Atalanta Bergamo have found adequate replacements on the transfer market, with Miranchuk they have signed a very strong 10 player, who is very likely to score a goal.

Ajax is no longer the team she was 2 years ago. The departures were very difficult for Ajax to compensate for, but nevertheless an outstanding season like 2 years ago is conceivable, Ajax has again a lot of promising talents in the squad.

FC Midtjylland:

The 2019/2020 Danish champion emerges as the clear underdog, especially defensively it could be very difficult as this is also a big construction site for FC Midjylland in the league.

Best Picks:

First of all, I would like to say that FC Midtjylland will certainly not have a chance in this very strong group, the only good pick in my opinion would be Evander, who is leading the game.

Atalanta, at Atalanta I consider Robin Gosens and Zapata the best picks. Zapata is an outstanding striker who never gets the recognition he deserves, but he is certainly one of the better strikers in the Serie A.

Liverpool have a lot of very strong players, Salah will most likely be very high owned, so this would be a bland consideration for me, but not a recommendation. But I think Minamino is very interesting, who could play a bigger role this season.

Ajax, Dusan Tadic is the Must Pick for the Dutch, next to Tadic I think Quincy Promes is very interesting, this one shines especially because of his speed, which can cause problems for the defence.

These were my favourites from group D, there are already articles about the Champions League groups A – C.
